"Fear the doily" is a series based on horror movies. In the compositions scared people are juxtaposed with doilies. The doilies replace the monster from the horror movie creating a parallel between the two to show the other type of monster related to excess, comfort and materialism which can also destroy us.

The anxiety created by our objects is the main theme of this series. Objects big and small take up a lot of our thoughts/ space in our lives till they finally consumes us.

In these paintings like a UFO or a bubble, the doily floats over the character. It follows us heavily like a shadow.

" Fear the doily sous-entend qu'il faut se méfier des excès d'une certaine façon de vivre, d'un certain confort, d'une certaine facilité, incarné par un napperon. " Claude Bouchard, La symbolique des réalités, Le Droit, Ottawa, 19-20 janvier 2008

"More than camp pop art though, Fear the Doily is also a strong statement about materialism. Replacing the monsters with dainty doilies, Bonder aims to show how the real monster in our everyday lives is excess and comfort. It’s something he feels we suffer from subconsciously, and that our compulsion to keep things clean and squared away has affected our natural thought patterns."

Mike Landry, Things of Desire, Issue 8
